Fluid Wax Technique

Mucostatic technique helps in recording all the basal tissues in a non-compressed state. To record the impression by mucostatic technique, Zinc-Oxide Eugenol, Impression Plaster or Fluid Wax is used. To record the tissue details by fluid wax technique, firstly, the final impression has to be taken by conventional materials like Zinc Oxide Eugenol or impression plaster.

The Posterior Palatal Seal area is marked by indelible pencil and is transferred over the previously taken final impression by putting it back in to the mouth.

The fluid wax is then applied as thin paint over the marked PPS area of the impression, placed again in the mouth and is allowed to set. Impression is then taken out and checked for positive tissue contact. The wax that comes in contact with the tissues will show glossy appearance. This is in contrast to green stick wax which looks dull when comes in tissue contact while moulding the borders.

There are distinct advantages of using wax, one, being it physiologic technique, it causes less tissue displacement. Secondly, the PPS can be incorporated into the trial denture base.

The disadvantages are, it consumes more chair time and the material handling is difficult.
